6th Grade AP Testing Letter

Dear Parent or Guardian:

Jefferson County Public Schools are slated to offer the Cognitive Abilities Test in October.  The CogAT is used as a part of the Advanced Placement or Gifted & Talented Program. If your child is already identified as Gifted & Talented and is currently participating in the Advanced Placement Program, they have the option of re-testing for a higher score.  If a higher score is not obtained, the new score will not change the student’s current AP status.

The Advance Program screening test will be administered on October 3rd for 6th grade students. All 6th grade students will be given the CogAt screening unless you OPT-OUT.  If you prefer the OPT-OUT option for your child, he or she will take the regular 6th grade math assessment on that day. Therefore, all 6th grade students will be given some form of assessment on October 3rd, 2017.  If you chose to OPT-OUT of the Advance Program screening, please sign and return the permission on the back.

If you would like to know more about this screening test, you can visit:

The Advance Program is a program for academically talented students in grades four through twelve.  The program is available in designated centers throughout the district.  The results of the screening test will be sent to you during the months of February – March 2018. Parents/Guardians will have the option of accepting placement for the upcoming school year, at that time.
