Twas the Last Night of the Can Drive by Mrs. Speiden

Twas the last night of the can drive
And all through the halls,
Mrs. Speiden was scurrying
Would they heed her calls?

The boxes were delivered
The flyers passed out
Spirit Week the grand prize
The kids would be excited, no doubt

The pennies poured in
Along with buttons and crumbs from dinners
The silver coins outnumbered
And 7th Grade the Winners!

We counted and counted
Our fingers smelled rank
We knew in a moment
We'd hit the big bank!

Over seven hundred was raised by our family,
All who gave could be proud!
For this year the Cubs
Could feed a huge crowd!

But the cans, oh the cans
Would their numbers ever grow?
The teachers, it seemed,
Were putting on a show.

"Let's wait 'til the end"
They said with a sneer.
"And steal Bowling's ramen!
He won't win this year!"

But Bowling, that Grinch
He took all the cash
He scampered to his Fusion,
Off to Sam's Club he dashed!

Thousands of packs of salty noodles
Were enough to overtake Rueger's current count
Her kiddos sure gave it their best,
But the challenge they couldn't mount

When Bowling found out,
He felt a funny tickle inside
that tiny black heart that wanted to win
And slowly, yes slowly, he started to grin.

"I could share my haul,"
He thought, "and help them achieve a tie,
They deserve a shared victory,
A chance to dress down and feel pride!"

So to the Golden team he skipped
With an offer of peace
A chance to honor the true cause
No longer a Grinch in his UK fleece.

They split the haul right down the middle
Three sizes bigger, Bowling's heart grew
They hugged as Rueger's eyes teared
We had witnessed a Holiday Miracle, true!

8000 the goal, ambitious it seemed
But then a miracle, a blessing, a dream!
We all came together, the Cub Family!
And reached ten thousand, four hundred and eighty-three!

HUGE Thanks to all who helped us this week! Most especially Maggie Hunt for managing the coins and getting them to the bank for us every day! I'm SO proud to be a Kammerer Cub today!!
